Facts About Accutane

Accutane (Isotretinoin) is used to treat a type of severe acne (nodular acne) that has not been helped by other treatments, including antibiotics. However, Accutane can cause serious side effects. Before starting Accutane, you should be aware of the many side-effects that have caused several consumer advocate groups to declare the drug unfit for prescription.

According to research conducted by USA Today, approximately 66 cases of suicide and over 1,300 cases of psychiatric problems associated with the use of Accutane have been reported to the FDA as of December 2000.

Mental retardation in children born to mother's who were either on Accutane during pregnancy or using Accutane before their pregnancy is a major concern for consumer advocacy groups. Groups like the Public Citizen’s Health Research Group has been warning the FDA about the risks of birth defects and mental retardation for fetuses exposed to the active ingredient in Accutane, isotretinoin, for over 20 years.
